A source said: “It’s going to take him weeks, maybe months.”

Despite the recovery ahead, crocked Simon joked from a hospital bed about breaking his back after pulling a wheelie on a powerful new electric bike, saying: “I should have read the manual.”

Simon was trying out the 60mph bike for the first time when he took a terrifying tumble on to concrete, breaking three vertebrae and needing six hours of surgery.

The telly mogul tweeted: “If you buy an electric trail bike, read the manual before you ride it for the first time. I have broken part of my back.

“Thank you to everyone for your kind messages. And a massive thank you to all the nurses and doctors. Some of the nicest people I have ever met. Stay safe everyone.”

Doctors in California have warned Simon he is facing a “hard recovery” that will include weeks in a back brace and intensive physiotherapy.

He is expected to spend several more days in hospital before being allowed to return to his Malibu home where he was injured.

A source said: “Simon has a long and difficult road ahead.

The electric bike Simon was riding has a top speed of 60mph, which means it would be banned on UK roads – where the limit for such bikes is 15.5mph

“He has told friends and colleagues that he wants to be back at work immediately but they’ve had to remind him that this is a very serious injury and he needs to just rest and recuperate. It’s going to take him weeks, and maybe months, to get back to where he was.

“And if ignores the doctor’s orders then it will be very bad news for him long term.

“He was up in bed talking about deals and telly but he had to be told to relax.” The lengthy recovery period means Simon will likely miss the America’s Got Talent final — despite telling pals it was essential for him to be there.

The source added: “Simon is utterly determined to get back to work but has been told it will be weeks before he is properly back on his feet.

“But as usual he is fighting against everyone to get back to the coal face as quickly as possible.”

It is thought Simon was having his first ride on a new £16,000 electric trail bike when he accidentally did a wheelie and fell backwards on his courtyard on Saturday.
