DANCING On Ice viewers switched off tonight as Maura Higgins took on a death-defying headbanger.

The move – which is banned in professional skating – involves one partner being hurled around by their skates with their head coming close to hitting the ice.

Maura performed the first headbanger of the series but fans couldn’t watch

In a rehearsal video aired before Maura’s live performance, she did in fact hit her head on the ice.

Smashing her head into the ice, Maura lay motionless and cradled her skull leaving her partner and trainers worried for her.

Luckily Maura’s live performance went off without a hitch and she wasn’t injured but viewers at home just couldn’t watch it.

One wrote: “When anyone attempts the headbanger I cant watch, I just have visions of their head cracking and blood spilling everywhere #DancingOnIce”

Another wrote: “I really wish they would put a ban on the headbanger , gives me so much anxiety just thinking about it, couldn’t even watch the pro’s do it earlier. #DancingOnIce”

The judges gave Maura a score of 30.5 for the routine that ended with the headbanger – her highest score in the competition.

However, while she said she was happy with the scores her face told a different story and fans noticed it.
