John, 52, voted to save former Love Island star Maura last night after she found herself in an emotionally-charged skate-off with Paralympian Libby Clegg.

But while John and Ashley Banjo decided to save the reality star, Jayne Torvill chose to keep Libby on the show.

This left head judge Christopher Dean to make the final decision, which saw him send Maura packing.

Maura, 29, immediately broke down in tears and was barely able to speak to Dancing On Ice hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby.

Some fans also took to social media, insisting that the judges made the wrong decision to save Libby.

Both John and Ashley Banjo chose to save Maura

Speaking today, John has said he hasn’t changed his opinion and continues to believe Maura should be in the competition still.

Appearing on Lorraine, the silver-haired judge said: “Ashley and I went for a clean slate based only on the skate-off.

“In that skate-off, Maura was clean and it was the best skate she has ever done.

“I said to her afterwards that if she had skated like that earlier, she might have still been in.

Maura couldn’t hide her emotions as she was eliminated

“She was comfortable, she didnt have wobbly legs. It was a beautiful, great skate and I had to save her.”

John added: “It caused controversy…!”

After learning her fate, Maura tearfully told Holly and Phil that she “really did want to stay”.

She then buried her face in professional partner Alexander Demetriou’schest.

John felt Maura’s skate-off performance was the best she had ever skated

Alexander told the presenters: “This girl is one of the greatest women I’ve ever met.”

Meanwhile, John stunned fans before Christmas after switching up his look.

The telly star jetted out to Australia for an appearance on I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here’s Extra Camp and turned up on screen with a head of silver hair.

During his interview on Lorraine, which was hosted by Christine Lampard, he revealed the reason behind his decision to go grey.

He said: “I first did it for my 50th birthday – I shaved my head let it go grey.

John used to dye his hair brown

“But my husband Scott said he wasn’t ready for it, so left it for two years.

“The problem is, when I’m travelling in other parts of the world for work, it’s really hard to find someone to dye my hair and match it.

“So I just decided it was going. Its not going back. This is me – and Scott likes it now!”
