GERMAN police investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann say “everything points to her being dead”.

Prosecutors in the country are probing convicted paedophile Christian B whose mobile phone data suggests he was in the Portuguese resort when the Brit toddler vanished in 2007.

Chief investigator Hans Christian Wolters admitted there still was no “smoking gun” evidence enabling charges to be brought against the 43-year-old criminal.

However, he told Portuguese state broadcaster RTP that German cops believe Christian B is “responsible” for the child’s disappearance and that she is dead.

He said: “The result of our investigation does not point in any way to the possibility the suspect might have kept Madeleine alive.

“We have nothing to indicate she could be alive.

“Everything we have points to her being dead. We have no margin of manoeuvre.”

On the suspect, he said: “All I can say is this is like a puzzle and there are many pieces that lead us to believe Christian B is responsible.

“One of the pieces is the signal from the mobile phone he was using at the time Madeleine McCann disappeared and has been shown to have been in the area of the Ocean Club resort where she was staying.”

Christian B is currently in Germany’s Kiel Prison for drugs offences and is due to start a seven-year sentence for the 2005 rape in Praia da Luz of an American pensioner.

He was convicted of the horrific sex crime late last year in Germany.

Mr Wolters also rubbished reports earlier this week that police believe Christian B had an accomplice and addressed accusations the paedo’s ex-lover was involved in an Algarve burglary he was linked to.

The Braunschweig-based prosecutor said: “Naturally we investigate everyone known to us to see if they had something to do with Madeleine’s disappearance.

“This woman was the suspect’s ex-girlfriend and she is classed as a witness but we don’t have any reason to believe she is linked to this crime.

“She is not a suspect for us. We are only investigating Christian B, nobody else.

“At this stage we believe he acted alone in this case.”

This comes as one of Christian B’s ex-friend called him an “evil psychopath” who’s “capable of taking a small child”.

Manfred Seyferth, 64, also said he didn’t see 43-year-old for months after Madeleine disappeared in 2007.

“Christian is a bad, bad man. He is evil,” said drifter Seyferth.

“I never liked him and he is a psychopath. He is obsessed with small children and I didn’t like it.

“He always had a young girlfriend with him and I think he is easily capable of taking a small child.”

In 2007, Seyferth lived in a caravan next to Christian’s house, a few minutes drive from Praia da Luz.

Seyferth, along with another pal Helge Busching, was the key witness in Christian’s rape trial in Braunschweig, Germany, last December.

Christian was identified by German prosecutors three months ago as the prime suspect in Madeleine’s abduction, in a sensational development to the 13-year riddle.

Madeleine, of Rothley, Leicestershire, was three when snatched from her family’s ground-floor holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, in May 2007.

The prime suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine is believed to have been in the resort in Portugal when she vanished in 2007
