PIERS Morgan hit out at I’m A Celeb star Kate Garraway’s loved-up hubby Derek Draper, saying: “If I’d known the bar was that low, I’d have had a crack myself.”

The 54-year-old Good Morning Britain host admitted he used to “lock horns” with the former Labour party press chief when he was a newspaper editor.

Writing in his Event magazine column today, he said: “It’s been no surprise to see my GMB colleague Kate Garraway being such a trouper on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!

“She’s always been a great laugh on and off camera, and more importantly, has always been able to laugh at herself.

“After Kate announced she was marrying her husband Derek Draper, with whom I used to lock horns when he was a Labour spin doctor and I was editor of the Daily Mirror, I emailed her to say: ‘If I’d known the bar was that low, I’d have had a crack myself.’”

However, he insisted Kate was so delighted with his comment that she put the quote on menu cards when they got married.

Derek has been an a dedicated cheerleader to his 52-year-old wife during her time in the I’m A Celeb jungle.

He has praised both his wifes amazing figure the product of an impressive two stone weight loss in the last year – and natural beauty.

And when fans asked if she was wearing make-up in the jungle, he told HOAR Online: “Take it from someone who knows – she never looks better than first thing in the morning.”

The touching comments have highlighted a fifteen-year romance that, to date, has remained largely out of the public eye.

Kate and Derek tied the knot in north London in September 2005 with a number of Strictly stars in the audience.

Among them were Anton du Beke – who went on to become Kates professional partner in the fifth series of the show two years later – and Brendan Cole, from whom Derek was secretly having dance lessons for the wedding.

The couples daughter Darcey, now thirteen, came along six months later followed by William, now ten.

Myles Stephenson, 28, flirted outrageously with Kate in the jungle and even called her his “telly crush”.

His admission led to Derek confessing that he had been left a bit “jealous and paranoid” although he added to Lorraine Kelly: “Shes coming home to me.”

Last night, viewers saw them share an emotional reunion at the end of I’m A Celebrity’s famous bridge.
