Lewis and Paige dated for a year when they were in their late teens

The Scots-born musician, who dated Paige for around a year when he was 18, told the crowd at London’s O2 Arena that he did in fact pen the single about his late grandma, not 22-year-old Paige.

Swigging from a bottle of Buckfast, Lewis said: “Contrary to popular belief, a lot of people think this song is about my ex-girlfriend, who you can now see every night on Love Island.”

Laughing as the audience cheered, he continued: “It’s actually about my grandmother who has sadly passed away a few years ago.

“I hope to god that ITV don’t contact her to be on a reality TV dating show.”

Fans were highly-amused by Lewis’ speech and many took to social media to comment on his shade-throwing moment.

Lewis joked that Brits fans to watch his ex on Love Island every night if they wished

One wrote: “If only Paige knew that Lewis Capaldi has terrorised her all over national TV tonight #loveisland!”

Another added: “Well Paige’s ex Lewis Capaldi made that very clear..”

Using several ‘crying with laughter emojis’, a third tweeted: “I absolutely love Lewis capaldi! The song wasnt about my ex on love island it was about my dead grandma…gutted for Paige #Brits2020.”

A fourth even said: “Lewis Capaldi is an absolute legend. He just shouted out Paige and asked us to see Love Island.”

This is not the first time Lewis has been forced to explain who his muse was for the smash hit song.

Last week, he spoke out on an Australian radio station to clear up the confusion, which was started by friends claiming he wrote Someone You Loved about Paige.

Lewis said: “It’s about my grandmother, who’s dead, f***.

“She died a few years ago. Your classic death, not coming back that sort of thing.”

This is the second time in a week Lewis has had to explain who the song is really about

Meanwhile, Lewis was the Brit Awards’ big winner of the night, scooping two of the four awards he was nominated for.

As well as Song Of The Year, Lewis also won Best New Artist.

Lewis also performed an emotional rendition of Someone You Loved at the beginning of the glitzy ceremony and left viewers in tears.
