LOVE Island’s Dr Alex George has given fans a glimpse around the intensive care unit where he works and explains what happens to patients suffering from coronavirus.

The 30-year-old answered questions from his followers via his YouTube channel and gave a valuable insight into what happens in a hospital’s ICU.

Dr Alex showed his fans what a patient could expect to see if they were admitted to hospital

Filmed over the space of a couple of weeks, Alex agreed to film from the hospital and speak to some of his colleagues on camera after Prime Minister Boris Johnson was rushed into hospital after testing positive to the deadly virus.

Alex explained in the video: “I want to talk to you a little bit about what kind of care we offer in intensive care is, what that really means.”

He added: “I think it is important for people to understand, people are worried.”

The doctor, who is working on the NHS frontline amid the pandemic, was dressed in his PPE uniform, which included a mask, a pair of goggles and surgical gloves.

Viewers were shown the equipment used on patients

As the footage spans a number of shifts, in one clip Alex looks very tired and emotional as he tells fans it’s been a hard day.

The footage begins with Alex at the entrance of the Emergency Department, and he explains the resuscitation room is a “red zone” where patients who are at risk of having the virus will go.

Patients who don’t have coronavirus symptoms will be sent to the “green area”.

The doctor told viewers he will first take a look at a patient outside before hearing the story from paramedics, and then decide where the patient needs to go.

Alex showed viewers the high-tech equipment that is used in one of the rooms, which includes a defibrillator and cardiac monitors.

He said in his video as he chatted to his colleagues: “I actually think we’re still getting busier, that’s my experience.”

Alex has been a calm and soothing voice to his fans since the pandemic hit, regularly spending his free time answering questions and trying to manage fears through social media.

Throughout the ordeal he has stressed to his followers how important it is to stay at home in order to support the NHS. He said in his video how “upsetting” it is to see younger patients really unwell.

The former Love Island contestant returned to his day job after appearing on the series in 2018.

He said in his video: “I think that’s what we’re finding emotionally challenging – is seeing people who are otherwise fit and well, coming in and having a real shock.”
