Appearing on Good Morning Britain today, Alex, 30, opened up on the impact fighting the deadly virus has had on his mental health.

Speaking to Lorraine Kelly and Dr Hilary, he said: “Sometimes it’s tough. I’d be lying if I said I haven’t shed a tear or so coming home. I’m here at my house and I have been upset once or twice from what I’ve seen.

“I’m very fortunate to have amazing colleagues. I’ve got a supportive girlfriend and she listens to what I say. I think it’s very important in these times to share what you’re feeling and to not be afraid.

“Traditionally men sometimes are afraid of sharing their emotions. I think we need all to open up and share what we’re feeling.”

The doctor continued: “I think it’s amazing at Lewisham Hospital they’ve set up a wellbeing group. So the idea that we can meet once a week and sit and talk about what we’ve experienced, which is actually really helpful.

“Even talking sometimes and saying, ‘That really did affect me.’ It gives you something when other people come around you and understand how you felt. That really helps, it does makes a difference.”

When asked about his mum, Alex said: “Yeah, she’s worried but she does understand. I said to her at beginning, ‘What am I to do?’ There’s no way I can walk away from this. I want to do my best.”

He added: “There are some risks here, but I signed up to this and I want to do my best.”

Earlier this week, the former reality star gave a tour around an ICU ward to reassure followers worried about coronavirus.

Filmed over the space of a couple of weeks, Alex agreed to film from the hospital and speak to some of his colleagues on camera after Prime Minister Boris Johnson was rushed into hospital after testing positive to the deadly virus.

He said in his video: “I think that’s what we’re finding emotionally challenging – is seeing people who are otherwise fit and well, coming in and having a real shock.”

Alex, who is originally from Carmarthen, Wales, studied medicine at Exeter University and is currently working in South East London.

The former Love Island contestant returned to his day job after appearing on the series in 2018.

He is currently living separately from his girlfriend Amelia Bath to protect her.
