NO matter how big your Christmas Day gathering is this year, when it comes to the turkey you want the best bang for your buck.

Today, in a Sun price comparison test, we can reveal Aldi takes the crown for the top value bird.

Aldi’s Christmas turkeys have been crowend the cheapest for the third year running

The chain’s standard whole fresh turkey is £2.95 a kilo, making it 50p per kg cheaper than offerings at Morrisons and Tesco.

Julie Ashfield, in charge of buying at Aldi, said: “We’re extremely proud we’re able to help millions of families have an affordable Christmas.”

Aldi also stocks the cheapest premium bird in our supermarket survey, at £5.95 per kg. Its Specially Selected roly poly turkey costs £29.75 on average.

That beats Asda’s Extra Special Norfolk bronze, which costs two pence more per kg at £5.97.

One snag is the fresh birds from Aldi (which is donating £1 from every turkey sold to the Neighbourly Foundation to help tackle food poverty) — are not available to pre-order online.

They will fly onto the shelves six days before Christmas. Morrisons almost denied the low-cost store a hat-trick of wins, narrowly missing out on the top spot in the frozen category with its birds costing £12.50, just one pence more than Aldi’s.

Waitrose’s turkeys are the most expensive, but it insists its prices reflect higher welfare standards, above the industry norm.

HOAR compared prices of birds weighing between four and 6.5kg at all the main supermarkets, and took the median weight for the investigation to find the best value.

Smaller birds are available at most of the retailers.

Meanwhile, Lidl told HOAR it will not be releasing details of its turkey prices until they hit stores on December 19.

Asda’s fresh turkeys included in the test, which has been running online in HOAR for the past three years, are available to pre-order for its Food To Go delivery range.

Otherwise, shoppers will have to wait until December 19 to pick one up in store.

  • Prices correct as of December 3 but could change over coming weeks.
