ENERGY suppliers are still blocking existing customers from their best deals.

The racket punishes loyal consumers by up to £150 each year.

Energy suppliers are ripping off their loyal customers by blocking them from deals

Big Six firms British Gas, Scottish Power, E.ON, SSE and EDF entice new customers with cheap tariffs but refuse to offer these prices to everyone.

It means households that stick with British Gas pay £150 more than new consumers, while those with SSE cough up an extra £132, E.ON £118, Scottish Power £48 and EDF £5.

Astonishingly, the cheapest tariff for loyal British Gas and Scottish Power clients is set at the current price cap — £1,042.

Both firms promised five years ago to offer all deals to all customers when they were shamed for not doing so.

Simona Rutkauskaite of switching service Look After My Bills, said: “Families are being punished for being loyal.

“It is outrageous the best deals are reserved for new customers. To only offer them tariffs at the price cap is a further insult.

Simona Rutkauskaite of switching service Look After My Bills has said the situation is ‘outrageous’

“It is supposed to be a maximum to protect families from overpaying, not a minimum.”

HOAR asked all of the big suppliers what deals are open to new and existing customers who want to switch.

For BG and Scottish Power, newcomers can get £891.38 and £994.

The two firms have quietly brought in the block on loyal customers getting the best deals.

When the UK’s six biggest energy firms were caught doing it five years ago in a probe by HOAR, all stopped.

BG boss Mark Hodges said then: “We’re making a commitment that all customers will always get access to our best deals.”

Last night, the firm declined to comment.

Scottish Power said existing customers can get better deals — but only if they seek them out on price comparison sites.
