From fans to duvets – how to keep your cool and count your pennies in the hot weather

IT’S been just a little too hot recently, hasn’t it?

Sales of fans jumped by 1,300 per cent over the past week, according to retailer Currys.

Instead of rushing to buy an expensive fan, consider cheaper alternatives

But you can stay cool on the cheap with my tips . . .

FAN-TASTIC: This simple hack is one of my favourites.

Buy a cheap fan, plonk a bowl of ice in front of it and the air will cool as it passes over the ice.

Groupon has great floor fans for £21.98, down from £31. But currys.co.uk has a four-inch chrome desk fan or a white desk fan, each now just £9.99, down from £12.99.

Blinds can add a cooling effect to your home

BLINDINGLY GOOD: Heat or sun coming in through your windows can turn your home into a greenhouse.

Avoid feeling like a pot plant by investing in blackout blinds which will block sunlight.

White ones are good because they deflect sunlight. Blackout blinds at argos.co.uk start from £10, or at John Lewis from £8. But those at The Range start from just £6.99.

ICE-COLD BOTTLE: Muggy, hot weather can play havoc with our sleep. You can buy cooling blankets that wick away excess moisture but they can be pretty pricey. I found some on Amazon for around £35.

My solution is a whole lot cheaper: Turn your hot-water bottle into a cold-water bottle.

Fill it with a little less water than usual and pop it in the freezer. Then wrap it in a towel and place it in your bed to cool down sheets.

SAVE: £35 if you have a water bottle already.

DUVET BE GONE: It can be hard to fall asleep without the comfort of a duvet, which you obviously won’t want on you in the heat.

Take a tip from those living in Indonesia by using a guling pillow — a long, tubular thing about 12ft long.

You rest your head on the middle then wrap the rest down either side of yourself so you feel comforted but not smothered.

You can currently get them at Wowcher for £14.99, down from £50.01.

I LOVE Rowntree Jelly Tots, above, but they’re £1.30 a bag at Sainsbury’s. That’s why I was pleased to find Rainbow Dots, below, at Aldi for just 69p.

…but Rainbow Dots may be better
