I LOVE a fish and chip Friday – and they are even more precious during lockdown.
And you don’t need to cast your net too wide to catch a good deal.
- Switch and save: Ditch popular cod or haddock for a different fish, such as pollock, and save money.
I also waste a lot of my chips, so splitting a large portion saves waste and money. Or you could make like a savvy Saver and reheat cold chips for tea the next day. - All the extras: At Asda, Mushy Peas are only 29p — almost half the price of Batchelors, 50p. You could raid your freezer and make your own. Defrost frozen peas, mash them and add butter, salt and pepper to taste.
SAVING: Around £1 on chip shop mushy peas - Go fish: If you want to prep your own fish supper indoors, buy two packs of four large Young’s cod fillets for £6 at Iceland, usually £3.50 each.
Or, grab a four-pack of Iceland battered whitefish fillets for just £1.75.
SAVING: £1 on cod - Chips ahoy! Making your own chips? Get Morrisons’ 2.5kg of “wonky” potatoes for just £1, compared to £2 for a bag of normal potatoes weighing slightly less.
SAVING: at least £1 - Order cash-in: When you are getting a takeaway of any kind through Uber Eats or Deliveroo, my No1 top tip is to remember to go via a cashback site. While the rates aren’t amazing, every little percentage back is money in your pocket.
SAVING: Around 1-2 per cent back of your order - PRICES correct at time of going to press. Deals and offers subject to availability.
