How social media can help you make big savings when shopping online

SOCIAL gatherings are out – but social media is in.

Your scrolling can also serve to save you money when online shopping, though. Phones at the ready . . .

Your scrolling addiction could be the key to big savings right now

TWITTER: Brands send out Twitter-only deals, found by typing #discount under the “Latest” tab. This is also how to learn about money-saving news.

It’s how I was alerted to Nike’s 25-per-cent discount if you sign up for free to be a nike.com member and use code MEMBER25 at checkout. Valid until the end of today.

MESSAGING: From WhatsApp to texts, brands are now offering big discounts when contacting you directly.

Clothing firm prettylittlething.com has sent out discounts via WhatsApp in the past, while Amazon’s Treasure Truck — sign up at amazon.co.uk/ttgo — will message you alerts to a big money-off deal, usually on trending products for a limited time.

Last week, I was offered 25 per cent off Panasonic wireless earbuds but previously there have been discounted spirits and sometimes big competitions.

EMAIL: The simplest save is usually to sign up to newsletters from your favourite brand. Sign up at made.com/voucher to get £10 off its furniture. Or get £10 off if you sign up to zalando.co.uk/zalando-newsletter, for lots of big-brand items.

INSTAGRAM: Search #discountcode or #promocode via the hashtags and these can lead you to individual Influencer codes and savings. I found a 15-per-cent discount at shopdisney.co.uk (use code ALICE15) and 20-per-cent at paperchase.co.uk. Let me know what you find.

FACEBOOK: I am on Facebook Marketplace a lot and, right now, there are huge furniture bargains as many people have clear-outs during lockdown.

I discovered an Ikea desk for a tenner and two chairs and a table down from £50 to £20. If you’re after something specific, turn on “Recommendations” to ensure you’re always on top of the best deals.
