The scheme isn’t new but the Rail Delivery Group is keen to raise awareness of the perk.
Research found that between March 2017 and March 2018, passengers used the cards to pay for almost 290,000 journeys in London compared to just under 2,000 in the North East, reports MoneySavingExpert.
Unemployment is expected to jump to 7.5 per cent – equal to 2.6million people – by the end of the year, according to The Bank of England.
The railcard will be beneficial to anyone who needs to travel to find a new job.
It can be used to get half price rail fares for Anytime Day tickets, Off Peak Day tickets and three-month season tickets across all operating services for those who are actively looking for work.
There are two cards available – one for those aged between 18 and 24 and another for those who are 25-years-old and older, but you must be claiming certain benefits to qualify for one.
Those who have claimed Jobseekers Allowance or Universal Credit for at least three months are eligible for the discount card.
People who get Incapacity Benefit or Income Support and are making an effort to look for work may also be entitled to one.
But you’re not guaranteed to be given one – your work adviser will need to assess your circumstances before issuing you with one.
