MORRISONS is cutting the price of 400 everyday items as it becomes the latest supermarket to slash costs.

The grocer says it’s dropping prices to help families get more for their money after the UK plunged into its worst-ever recession.

The price cuts include cupboard staples such as pasta and bread, as well as fresh meat and vegetables.

Cleaning products and toilet roll will also be reduced as part of the price initiative, which comes into effect from tomorrow, September 7.

Morrisons says it’ll be reducing prices by 23% on average.

For example, a box of 240 PG Tips will be reduced from £4.50 to £3.49, a saving of £1.01 or 22%.

Morrisons is also slashing the cost of a 750g jar of Dolmio pasta sauce from £2 to £1.45, saving customers 55p or 27%.

And the price of a 500g pack of Morrisons own-brand beef mince has also been lowered from £3.30 to £2.69, a reduction of 61p or 18%.

Morrisons has already cut the cost of 800 items since last year to help families – but it’s not the only supermarket to drop prices.

Tesco launched a new price initiative in March 2020 where it vowed to match rival Aldi on hundreds of cupboard staples.

Meanwhile, Asda has brought back its iconic “pocket tap” advert to promote a £100million investment to lower prices on thousands of lines.

It’s still a good idea to compare prices on individual items though, so you can make sure you’re getting the best value for money.

The price cuts come after the cost of several high-profile items continued to rise at the height of the coronavirus crisis, due to stock-piling by panicked shoppers.

For example, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported how the price of a tin of beans went up by 0.4% in May 2020, while the cost of nappies increased by 0.3%.

The ONS stopped its weekly price increases report in August 2020, but in its last release, dated August 20, it noted a 0.3% rise in the price of food purchased online.

David Potts, Morrisons chief executive said: “It’s been a tough year for many families who find themselves stretched.

“To play our full part in feeding the nation, we’re cutting prices and holding them low to make our food more affordable for everyone.

“These are not short term promotions these are price cuts that are here to stay.”
