COIN collectors can now get their hands on a brand new commemorative dinosaur 50p featuring a Hylaeosaurus – and it could be worth more than its face value.
It’s the final coin to be released by manufacturer the Royal Mint as part of its Dinosauria Collection in conjunction with the Natural History Museum.

Sadly the coins aren’t going into circulation, which means you won’t be able to find them in your spare change.
Instead, you’ll have to buy one from the Royal Mint. Prices start at £10 for a brilliant uncirculated version or £20 for a brilliant uncirculated version in colour.
For £60, you can get the coin as a silver proof, or you can pay £5 more at £65 for a coloured silver proof.
And if you’re feeling really flush, you can get a gold proof version for a cool £1,020.
There’s an unlimited number of the plain brilliant uncirculated coins available, while there are 50,000 of the coloured version.
Meanwhile, there’s 3,000 of the plain silver proofs, 7,000 of the coloured silver proofs, and 350 of the gold proofs available.

How much could the coins be worth?
As the coins aren’t gone into circulation they’re unlikely to be worth as much as popular circulated coins, such as this rare Isle of Man circulated 50p featuring the Snowman that sold on eBay for £336 – 672 times face value.
But there’s definitely interest from collectors. We found a “Strike Your Own” version of the Iguanodon 50p, which can be made at the Royal Mint Experience tourist attraction for £6.90, has sold for up to £90.88 on eBay after attracting 28 bids.
The Megalosaurus seems less popular, but we still found a silver proof of the coloured version, which would have cost £65 from the Royal Mint, sell for £12 more at £77 on eBay after attracting 18 bids.

Meanwhile a plain “Strike Your Own” version of the Megalosaurus sold for £31 on eBay after attracting 11 bids.
Once your coin has arrived, collectors can also download The Royal Mint’s free “Activate App” and scan the coin’s packaging to unearth exclusive content including facts, animated clips and imagery.

Currently, it’s the NHS 10p coin that’s shot up most in value due to the coronavirus crisis, selling for 60 times its value on eBay.
