He insisted: If were going to get rid of it, lets replace it with a Trump deal. President Trump is a great dealmaker, by his own account and many others.

Boris then chided the US for its attack on No10s plan to ban Huawei only from core elements of the countrys 5G network.

Senior US officials called any cooperation with the Chinese giant nothing short of madness on Monday as they handed over to ministers new intelligence on the potential of hacking and cyber attacks by the Chinese state.

But the PM said: The British public deserve to have access to the best possible technology.

We want to put in gigabit broadband for everybody.

Mr Johnson also faced pressure from Australias former leader yesterday over what do about Huawei, with a decision due by the end of the month.

Malcolm Turnbull warned the UK could be vulnerable if it uses Huawei for 5G.
