BORIS Johnson has been blasted for giving more cash to build cycle paths.

The PM has handed councils £175million to build the new lanes to back “the public’s strong appetite for greener and more active travel.”

The PM said: ‘We want to do everything we can to make it easy for people to include some activity in their daily routines

They will also fund ‘School Streets’ – where roads are shut during the school run, Low Traffic Neighbourhoods where residential side streets are closed to stop rat-running, as well as pavement upgrades.

But the Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has set out tough new conditions, in a bid to try and stop the chaos caused by temporary cycle lanes put up earlier in the pandemic.

The PM said: “We want to do everything we can to make it easy for people to include some activity in their daily routines – whether that’s cycling to work or walking safely to school.

“We can see the public’s strong appetite for greener and more active travel, and this funding will help ensure the right infrastructure is in place to build truly active neighbourhoods.”

‘MONEY WASTED ON AN ANTI-CAR CAMPAIGN’

Mr Shapps added: “It has been great to see so many people build cycling and walking into their daily travel habits.”

But campaigners fumed that the cash was yet more money wasted on an anti-car campaign, saying they are “sick to death of undemocratic decisions hidden behind virtue signalling Covid reasoning.”

Howard Cox from FairFuelUK said: “What is the purpose of spending millions of tax payers money when the economy is broke? This is wasted money by a gullible Minister.

“Consultations will only work when all stakeholders are included, not just cyclists and the green politicos.

“Businesses are suffering while cyclists are pandered to. Even more astounding, when 99% of the population will never ever get on a bike.”
