BORIS Johnson has officially resigned – but he will continue to steer Government as the quest for a new leader begins.

The PM quit as Tory leader yesterday after ministers and MPs made clear his position was untenable, with support crumbling around him in recent days.

But during his resignation speech, Mr Johnson said he will remain as Prime Minister until a successor is in place, expected to be by the time of the Conservative Party conference in October.

The race to become the next Prime Minister is now underway with at least ten candidates are likely to throw their hat into the ring.

Ben Wallace and Rishi Sunak have emerged as early frontrunners although the likes of Sajid Javid and Liz Truss shouldn’t be ruled out either.

Boris’ resignation came after nearly 60 Tory MPs resigned in protest at the PM’s battered leadership, which has spiralled since the Chris Pincher scandal.
