A Cabinet source revealed: He said he wanted a return to clarity, addressing the concerns of the public.

A new cross-Whitehall committee on criminal justice will include Home Secretary Priti Patel, Justice Secretary Robert Buckland and Chancellor Sajid Javid, The Times reported.

It added it will be modelled on the Brexit XO committee, with a rolling membership of ministers and specialists.

Yesterday Ms Patel told the Cabinet up to 10,000 children could be caught up in county lines gangs with kids as young as ten suffering mental, sexual and physical abuse.

She said ministers need to bring in education, health and other departments to sort the problem.

And she added that the Border Force would become a proper law enforcement agency.

Mr Buckland said the probation service and community sentences both needed overhauling.
