BORIS Johnson tweeted out a friendly thank you to the Australian Prime Minister after a call today – but tagged wrong Scott Morrison.

The PM and the Aussie leader had talks today over hopes of a new free trade deal, but an unsuspecting Twitter user by the same name was praised instead.

Mr Johnson said: “Great call with my friend @ScottMorrison this morning.

“Whether it’s boosting trade between great nations or developing cutting-edge technology to tackle climate change – the UK and Australia are partners in building back better from coronavirus.”

The PM quickly corrected the bungled tweet – tagging @ScottMorrisonMP instead of the Twitter user with the same name.

The man he tweeted has just 67 followers and had previously joked about the case of mistaken identity.

In response to a post way back in 2016, he said: “I seem to be a popular guy in Australia, but not in a good way.”

And people who spied Mr Johnson’s mistake cracked jokes once he corrected himself, with one person saying: “Second time lucky Boris.”

Another said: “At least you tagged the right person now.”

One poked fun at the series of Government U-turns, saying: “Even your tweets do u turns.”

Australia and the UK are gearing up for a post-Brexit trade deal which could see Brits’ get their hands on Tim Tams – an famed delicacy from down under – and Boris offering up marmite in exchange for vegemite.

A spokesman for the PM said today: “Building on the long-standing friendship and partnership between the UK and Australia, the leaders welcomed progress on a Free Trade Agreement and resolved to work at pace to secure a mutually beneficial deal.”
