Mr Johnson is rushing forward his promise to open up the “Matryoshka doll of Russian-owned companies” often set up offshore to keep the owner’s identity secret.

They are used to buy lavish homes in London — a ploy MPs claim launders money by Russians linked to the Kremlin.

A Government source said last night: “Our law enforcement agencies must be supported with strengthened powers to investigate and prosecute those corrupt Russian elites laundering money and asset here.”

Russia has warned of “military consequences” if Finland and Sweden join Nato.

The threat was made by Maria Zakharova of its foreign affairs ministry.
