UK’s crumbling hospitals & creaking kit have caused 1,600 deaths and injuries

NHS trusts registered a whopping 1,602 such incidents in the past financial year, according to Labour analysis.

Shadow health secretary Jonathan Ashworth, who uncovered the numbers, warned: “Hospitals are falling apart, with roofs collapsing in and boilers breaking, putting patients and NHS staff at risk.

“The NHS is now in desperate need of a serious plan to provide the modern, safe facilities and equipment patients deserve.” All of England’s NHS trusts have to report when someone is killed, injured or there is a ‘near miss’ at one of their sites.

The data does not reveal the nature of the injuries or near-misses, but deaths are understood to be rare.

The North West had the worst record, clocking up 339 incidents in 2020/2021.

The South West had the lowest number with 67 incidents over the year.
