CARE home staff and residents will get free PPE as part of the Government’s £550million war on winter Covid infections to be unveiled today.

Workers will also be banned from moving between facilities in all but a handful of cases — while a new care homes czar will be appointed to prevent a repeat of the catastrophe.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the money would protect the most vulnerable as fears grow England is heading for a second spike in cases.

He said: “We’re entering a critical phase in our fight against coronavirus with winter on the horizon.

“Our priority is to make sure we protect those most vulnerable who are receiving care, and our incredible workforce, by limiting spread of the virus and preventing a second spike.

“This Winter Plan gives providers the certainty they need when it comes to PPE. It provides additional support to help care homes limit the movement of staff, stop the spread and save lives.

“We will be monitoring the implementation of this carefully and will be swift in our actions to protect residents and colleagues across the country.”

The first Covid wave killed thousands in UK care homes and infection rates are again beginning to creep up.

Ministers are desperate to fend off another spike.

The £546million infection control fund will help pay staff so they can work at just one care home – to limit the danger of them unwittingly transmitting the virus between locations.

A new chief nurse for adult social care will be appointed to raise standards.
