DOMINIC Raab this morning sparked chaos and confusion by suggesting that cafes like McDonalds and Nando’s will HAVE to offer table service like in pubs.

But the Government has confirmed that only venues which are licenced – and serve alcohol – need to come to the table to take your order.

Only if you’re in a licenced venue do you need to order from the table

Mr Raab appeared to suggest all food venues would have to offer table service

This is because the Government are particularly concerned about people not socially distancing when they’ve been drinking.

However, Mr Raab appeared to go against the Government guidance today, and said: “In all of the restaurants and hospitality you can go in and order from the tables, but what you can’t do without a mask is just sit around and mill around.”

And when asked if customers could queue to order food and then sit down, Mr Raab added: “My understanding is that you need to be able to order from the tables.”

However, that is only the case when you’re at a place which serves booze, like pubs, or restaurants.

Anyone who is eating in a restaurant must sit down to eat their food at a table.

Take-aways are exempt from the new table service rule – even if they have areas to sit in.

So McDonalds, high-street coffee chains like Costa and Pret a Manger won’t need to offer table service complete with waitresses.

However, many places are offering table service anyway to try and make customers feel safer.

Customers are able to order at the kiosk, at the till or from your table using the McDonald’s app and staff will then bring the food to your table.

Other safety measures to keep customers and staff safe includes hand-sanitising stations, floor markings and perspex screens.

The news comes alongside rules which will see all restaurants, bars and pubs shut at 10pm to try and combat the spread of the virus.

It means the end of the late-night takeaway for many – and could last for as long as six months.
