Those who could lose their jobs include Business Secretary Andrea Leadsom, Trade supremo Liz Truss, Environment Secretary Theresa Villiers and Work and Pensions Secretary Therese Coffey.

There are only seven women in the 23-strong Cabinet and one official admitted: It wont look good.

Hes got his sights on a number of senior females but there are very few who can replace them. One option would be to promote a lot of women into junior ministerial ranks.

But that wont solve his women problem at Cabinet level.

During last months election campaign, Mr Johnson vowed to support women to reach their full potential if he won.

A source said: Hes ready to wield the axe but well have to wait and see if he has the nerve to take out so many women at one strike.
