THE Government looks set to extend rules banning landlords from evicting restaurateurs and retailers, in a major victory for a Sun campaign.

Reports suggest the government will prolong its existing ban on businesses being turfed out from their premises.

Rules banning landlords from evicting restaurateurs and retailers are set to be extended

It is due to end this month, but reports suggest it will be extended to the end of the year to help firms still suffering because of the pandemic.

The moratorium on business evictions was introduced in April to help shops and restaurant owners forced to close their doors because of lockdown.

Some landlords have agreed rent holidays, but others have left tenants fearing a huge bill.

UKHospitality, the trade body for the restaurant industry, has warned of a “bloodbath” of company failures in the sector.

It reckons hospitality firms face bills totalling more than £760 million for unpaid rent.

Last weekend, leading restaurant groups such as Burger King and Itsu begged Boris Johnson for an extension to the evictions ban, warning of “a critical risk that many restaurants will face eviction proceedings from 1 October”.

A Government spokesperson said: “We recognise the huge challenges faced by commercial tenants and landlords during this period and we’re working closely with them to ensure they are supported.”
