GREECE has been removed from the UK’s travel corridor tonight dashing hopes of winter breaks – but Dubai was handed an air bridge.
Mainland Greece was removed from the list after a spike in cases and a second lockdown – but the main holiday islands remain safe for now.
Transport Sec Grant Shapps said tonight: ” Latest data also means we have to REMOVE all of GREECE apart from Corfu, Crete, Rhodes, Zakynthos and Kos from the #TravelCorridor list.
“From 4am Saturday 14th November, if you arrive into the UK from this destination you will need to self-isolate. “
Today’s news means travellers coming back from the United Arab Emirates won’t have to self-isolate from 4am on Saturday.
The Middle Eastern holiday hotspot favoured by reality TV stars and footballers was added to Britain’s safe list of nations.
People are allowed to return from their holidays during the second lockdown – but are banned from going out on one until December 2.
The cities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai are also major hubs for longer haul travel – giving the travel industry a boost ahead of a new ‘test and release’ scheme which will cut quarantine to around seven day next month.
Transport Secretary Grant Shapps also revealed Bahrain, Chile, Iceland, Cambodia, Laos, Qatar and the Turks and Caicos Islands were being added to the safe list.
But all travel to Denmark has been banned for a further 14 days following the outbreak of a mutated strain on Covid-19 on mink farms in the Scandi nation.
Grant Shapps tweeted: “BAHRAIN, CHILE, ICELAND, CAMBODIA, LAOS, UAE, QATAR and TURKS & CAICOS ISLANDS have been ADDED to the #TravelCorridor list. If you arrive from these countries after 4am on Saturday 14th November you will NOT need to self-isolate.”
And he extended the ban on people travelling to Denmark – after an outbreak of covid-infected mink affecting the country.
He added: “The travel ban on DENMARK will also be EXTENDED for a further 14 days. A reminder that under the current restrictions, travel outside of the home, with the exception of a limited number of reasons including work or education, is not permitted.”
