Sir Keir Starmer revealed his mum-in-laws condition was awful

No details have been released about the incident, but Sir Keir and his family have been visiting her in intensive care for four days.

Speaking today, he said: “Shes awful, Im afraid.

“Shes still in intensive care and its been very very hard for my wife and her family. So a very very difficult few days for us.”

Asked for a prognosis, the leadership favourite labelled it a very bad accident.

He continued: “Its very difficult, very very difficult.

“The NHS are absolutely brilliant in what theyre doing and we want to just thank them for everything theyre doing.”

It comes as the leadership frontrunner returned to the campaign after four days off.

Appearing on BBC Radio 5 Live this morning, the 57-year-old hit back when asked if it was “racist to say there are too many foreigners in Britain”.

He said: “Can I just say how uncomfortable I am about that just at the moment.

“We’ve just spent four days in intensive care with my mother-in-law where there are people of every nationality giving her the most incredible care.

“And therefore pitching this debate in that way I think is… just got to be very very careful.”

Back on the campaign, the shadow Brexit Secretary started the day pledging to “end the monopoly of power in Westminster”.

He is currently the favourite, with political betting aggregator BonusCodeBets.co.uk having him at at 3/10, Rebecca Long-Bailey at 7/2, Lisa Nandy on 13/2 and Emily Thornberry on 100/1.
