LEFT-wing Labour activists are sabotaging their party’s by-election campaign in a bid to topple leader Sir Keir Starmer.

They have been out in force urging voters to stay at home or back another candidate.

MPs fear Sir Keir is doomed if he cannot defend the 3,525 majority

Ahead of Thursday’s Batley and Spen poll, MPs fear Sir Keir is doomed if he cannot defend the 3,525 majority in the Yorkshire seat his party has held since 1997.

His chances have already been eroded by ex-Labour rabble-rouser George Galloway, who is standing for his self-styled Workers’ Party of Britain.

He is appealing to Muslim voters by campaigning on the Middle East and Palestine — and has reached out to Lefties by proclaiming that if they want rid of Starmer “I’m your man”.

Ex-leader Jeremy Corbyn and his henchman John McDonnell have been absent from the hustings, as have other seasoned Labour campaigners.

A party campaign source said: “There have been a number of so-called Labour activists in the constituency actively campaigning against their party. They mistakenly believe that defeat will force a leadership contest and give them chance to take control of the party again.

“That’s nonsense. The hard-Left have had their time in charge and look where it’s left us.”

Sir Keir has suffered two by-election humiliations this year by surrendering stronghold Hartlepool and losing the deposit in Chesham and Amersham.
