Labour’s Sir Keir Starmer and Nicola Sturgeon lead congratulations to Boris and Carrie on new baby

LABOUR leader Sir Keir Starmer and Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon have led the congratulations to Boris and Carrie on their new baby boy.

The PM’s fiancé gave birth this morning and the new parents have been met with a huge congratulations from politicians across the country.

Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds announced their baby was born this morning

Sir Keir tweeted this morning: “Wonderful news. Many congratulations to Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds.”

His congratulations were echoed by Ms Sturgeon who wrote: “Some good news – sending congratulations to Carrie and the PM. And wishing health and happiness to the wee one.”

MPs across the political divide were thrilled there was finally some good news coming out of Downing Street.

Labour leadership contender Jess Phillips offered her congratulations and some advice to the new parents.

She wrote: “Congratulations to the Prime Minister and @carriesymonds. It gets better after the first 8 weeks, or your standards drop so dramatically in that time that you think it’s got easier. I wish them all well.”

The PM’s current chancellor Rishi Sunak and former chancellor Sajid Javid both tweeted within moments of each other.

Mr Sunak wrote: “Great to hear Downing Street is getting a new resident. Congratulations to @BorisJohnson @carriesymonds on the birth of their son.”

And Mr Javid was thrilled at the news.

He wrote: “Congratulations @carriesymonds @BorisJohnson. Such wonderful uplifting news!”

Northern Ireland First Minister Arlene Foster said: “Wonderful news of the birth of a baby boy! Many congratulations to the PM @BorisJohnson and @carriesymonds. More sleepless nights ahead!”

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: “So thrilled for Boris and Carrie. Wonderful to have a moment of unalloyed joy!”

Speaker of the House of Commons Sir Lindsay Hoyle offered his congratulations on behalf of all the MPs in Parliament.

He said: “On behalf of everyone in the House of Commons, may I say congratulations to the Prime Minister and Carrie Symonds on the birth of their son. Such happy news amid so much uncertainty – 2020 is certainly a year they will never forget. ”

Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price said: “Congratulations to Carrie Symonds and Boris Johnson on the birth of their new baby boy. From the joy of this moment I wish them, and every new and soon to be parent, all the health and happiness in the world.”

Labour MP Ruth Cadbury was embarrassingly forced to withdraw a tweet saying the PM had found “yet another excuse” to miss PMQs because of the birth of his baby.

Her tweet referred to the fact Mr Johnson hasn’t been seen at PMQs for weeks while was was recovering from coronavirus.

She quickly deleted the tweet and wrote: “So Boris Johnson has a good excuse to miss #PMQs today – congratulations!”

Asked why she had deleted her original, she said: “It was supposed to be amused irony, but that obviously got lost, so I deleted.”

“Obviously I’m pleased for Carrie and him. He is entitled to take parental leave.”

Other MPs joked the PM had had “such a quiet time” dealing with the coronavirus crisis, and the new baby would keep them busy.

Tory MP Ben Bradley wrote: “Huge congratulations Boris and Carrie. Amazing news and so pleased all are happy and healthy. They’ve been able to have such a quiet time recently I’m sure this can help keep them busy!”
