Foreign affairs chief Chuka Umunna said the UK had a moral duty to help anti-China protesters.

Mr Umunna told HOAR: The repressive and violent scenes in Hong Kong have continued to escalate. Beijing shows no sign of respecting the promises made in the handover.

The UK has a moral and legal duty to stand with protesters in their efforts to secure their rights and freedoms.

He added: The other parties must match our commitment or face being responsible for turning a blind eye to the situation in Hong Kong.

Anti-government protests have rocked Hong Kong for months.

They kicked off in June after China announced plans to allow extradition to the mainland.

Critics feared this would be the beginning of a Chinese bid to tear up Hong Kongs judicial independence and bring it under the Communist Partys control.

The bill has been ditched, but police and activists are still clashing in bloody battles on the streets.
