LIDL has announced it is helping out vulnerable people during the coronavirus outbreak – by giving them £100,000.

The supermarket will be donating the money to its partnership with Neighbourly, a cooperation which connects businesses with charities and trusts.

Lidl is donating thousands of pounds to help families in need

The money will be used in its Feed it Back scheme, launched in 2017, which provides school meals to children.

The scheme will now extend to the elderly and families as part of a special Covid-19 scheme.

Christian Härtnagel, chief executive at Lidl GB, said: “Through our store connections, and through this additional donation, we are able to directly support groups who are out in our communities.

“They’re doing an exceptional job of looking after the most vulnerable.”

It follows supermarkets working hard to support people in the community as the disease continues to spread.

Iceland, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Tesco and Lidl are all offering special opening times for the vulnerable and elderly so they can get all the groceries they need.

Co-op, Asda, Aldi, Lidl and Morrisons meanwhile have all created extra roles to help create with the demand placed on the stores over the next few months.

Several stores and businesses have been forced to temporarily close as the Prime Minister discouraged people from going out and socialising.

Ikea is closing its 22 UK stores as a result of the outbreak.

Fuller’s announced today it is closing all 215 of its pub and hotels.

TK Maxx is also facing closures, stating it will shut its doors for its stores and also sister chain Homesense for the forseeable future.
