MINISTERS and NHS bosses have hailed Britain’s Super Saturday bounce back a success — claiming the vast majority of pubgoers acted sensibly.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said on Sunday: “From what I have seen — although there are some pictures to the contrary — very, very largely people have acted responsibly.

“Overall, I am pleased with what happened yesterday.

“It was really good to see people out and about and largely, very largely, using social distancing.”

He did however warn that the Government stood “ready” to lockdown individual venues, cities or towns if their Covid-19 cases spiked again.

Around 23,000 pubs reopened under strict social distancing rules.

NHS England chief Sir Simon Stevens said: “Pleasingly we did not see the kind of scenes that people feared.

“It was a foolish few but the sensible majority, I think is the story across the country and long may that continue.”

Saturday also saw restaurants and hairdressers open after four months.

Churches were given the go-ahead too, with one hosting its first drive-in service.

Forty vehicles full of worshippers gathered outside the village hall in Swanmore, Hants, to hear words from the minister — who spoke from a car park.
