MOTORISTS could be charged by the mile when ministers wean the Treasury off fuel duty.
It comes as tax receipts from fuel drop with more people driving electric cars.
But business minister Paul Scully said any plan was unlikely to come in soon.
He warned: “If duty starts to go by the wayside, the Treasury’s got to find something to replace that with.”
There are predictions the government will make nothing from fuel duty by 2040.
No 10 said a road pricing system was “something we are keeping a close eye on”.

The PM’s official spokesman said: “We keep taxes under review.
“We are committed to ensuring motoring tax revenues keep pace with the changes brought about by the switch to electric cars.”
