MPS will get another pay rise next month – to £82,000 a year.

The increase – which is up 3.1 per cent from last year’s salary – will be effective from April 1, Parliament officials confirmed earlier.

MPs will get another pay rise next month

Its the first time salaries have exceeded £80,000 a year, and is up a whopping £16,000 compared to April 2010.

Select committee chairs, Secretaries of State and Cabinet ministers will get more cash on top of that.

The rate, which is set by IPSA, is linked to public sector earnings, which come from the Office for National Statistics.

The House of Lords is also set to hike the amount peers can claim tax-free up to £323 per day.

IPSA interim chair Richard Lloyd said: “Our review of MPs’ staffing budgets in 2019 found demands on MPs’ offices were high, with staff doing difficult and stressful casework with constituents on a very wide range of problems.

“There was often high staff turnover, with salary levels below comparable roles elsewhere, based on independent benchmarked evidence.

“In many MPs’ offices, relatively little time or money was spent on staff training, wellbeing and development.

“As a result, we have provided additional funding in MPs’ 2020-21 staffing budgets for staff training and welfare, security, and changes to the salary bands and job descriptions for MPs’ staff to bring them into line with the jobs they actually do.”

The news comes just a day after it was confirmed that MPs would be given an extra £20million overall to boost their staffing.

MPs will get an above-inflation boost to their pay

The UK’s 650 MPs will get around £25,000 each – with the cash to be spent on training, welfare and security.

Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle said his staff were “struggling to cope” with their current workloads.

A report found that the job descriptions didn’t match up with the work they were actually doing.
