NEW telly adverts aim to curb catcallers who sexually harass women.

The campaign will target blokes who wolf whistle or make lewd comments.

Ministers want to shame men into changing their ways after a number of high-profile cases of violence against women.

A Home Office source said: “It will aim to raise awareness about how certain behaviours can make women feel incredibly uncomfortable.

“They should not have to deal with that in modern Britain. And it will aim to make it shocking and inappropriate — just as drink-drive ads have been an effective way of stopping people getting behind the wheel after a few pints.”

Last year Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham launched a similar campaign aimed at boorish behaviour.

A social media clip showed a young woman being sexually harassed on social media, jogging, at a coffee shop and a night out.

ONS data from last July found two in three women aged 16 to 34 experienced harassment in the previous 12 months.

And 44 per cent were subject to catcalls, whistles, sex comments or jokes.

Wolf whistling could still become illegal under proposed plans.

And Home Secretary Priti Patel also says violence against women and girls will be treated as seriously as terrorism, organised crime and child sex abuse.
