ONE in three UK jobs is at risk in the virus lockdown — and the Chancellor’s seat is one of the worst hit.
A shocking 7.5million staff — 27 per cent of all workers — could be laid off, the RSA think-tank has warned.
And in a blow to the man battling to save the economy, the threat rises to 35 per cent in Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s home constituency in Richmond, North Yorkshire.
Seaside towns and countryside areas which rely on hospitality and tourism are most at risk of mass lay-offs.
But even in the tech hubs of Oxford, Cambridge and London, one in five jobs is in danger.
Employment experts came up with the alarming figures by looking at what jobs are being furloughed and the state of local economies around Britain.
Alan Lockey from the RSA said: “No part of the country is likely to be spared a severe recession but those most dependent on hospitality and tourism will be particularly badly hit, especially rural areas — including many Tory shires.”
He praised the Government’s robust response to the crisis, which includes a major jobs rescue plan.
But he warned of the danger of “prolonged unemployment on whole swathes of the population” and said a universal basic income of £48 a week for most adults would halt destitution overnight.
In a separate gloomy report, finance experts at Ernst & Young warned that the economy may not bounce back until 2023 after shrinking by 6.8 per cent this year.
And an Institute of Directors poll found that confidence among bosses has plummeted to a lowest-ever score of minus-22 and their confidence in the economy to an unprecedented minus-69.
