ONLINE trolling will become a criminal offence following England’s Euro 2020 race-hate scandal.

“Cyber flashing” and encouraging people to self harm will also be criminalised in a major shake-up of the internet.

The Law Commission said current legislation fails to stop the harmful abuse peddled online.

The new law would cover anyone sending a post which is likely or intends to cause harm.

Sending explicit images without consent and encouraging self harm would also be illegal.

Prof Penney Lewis, of the Commission, said: “Online abuse can cause untold harm to those targeted. Change is needed.”
