The Home Secretary hit out after a rise in the number of boats attempting to cross the Channel.

Last week a group of migrants almost made it into British waters in a paddling pool, using road signs for oars.

Ms Patel said British police are working with French counterparts to break up camps and patrol Normandy beaches.

She said: “We are also returning people coming to our country through this particular route.

“It’s important to reference the fact the individuals that are coming are coming from a safe country where they could be claiming asylum, in France, or Germany, or even in Belgium.

“So it’s important that other European countries, do much more to stop the flow of people coming through and ensure that they have the right kind of asylum processes in their country.”

Britain is now the No1 destination for child migrants seeking asylum in Europe. A report by the European Asylum Support Office revealed the UK took in over a fifth of the 3,650 unaccompanied minors who applied for protection last year.

Ms Patel said Brexit has not affected the UK’s cooperation on migration with key allies including France and Belgium.
