A quarter of furloughed workers are likely to lose their jobs when Government cuts payouts, a poll has found

A survey of 2,000 businesses on behalf of London-based lender MarketFinance Ltd found nearly 25 per cent planned job cuts.

The poll also found that 45 per cent of companies plan to bring back up to half of their furloughed staff next month.

The government ‘s coronavirus job retention scheme was announced in March 20 allowing furloughed employees to claim 80 per cent of their wages up to £2,500 a month.

From August employers will have to contribute to wages, initially by paying national insurance and pension contributions.

From September they will have to pay those contributions plus 10 per cent of salaries.

Then from October they will have to pay those contributions plus 20 per cent of salaries.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has extended the scheme until the end of October. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) estimates furlough is costing around £8billion a month.
