He is said to have been at loggerheads with the PM’s Chief Special Adviser Dom Cummings since his spad was sacked over a leak inquiry.

Mr Javid quit as Chancellor after Number 10 ordered him to sack his team of aides, a source close to the former minister said.

He said that “no self-respecting minister” could accept getting rid of his staff.

A source close to Mr Javid said: “He has turned down the job of Chancellor of the Exchequer.

“The Prime Minister said he had to fire all his special advisers and replace them with Number 10 special advisers to make it one team.

“The Chancellor said no self-respecting minister would accept those terms.”

He is now said to have been replaced by Rishi Sunak, who was chief secretary to the Treasury.

Andrea Leadsom was also fired this morning, being booted out of her role as Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

Esther McVey was also sacked, losing her job as Housing Minister.

Attorney General Geoffrey Cox also lost his job, despite being a loyal supporter who had asked to stay on.

The sacking came just ten minutes before he was due to take AG questions in the House of Commons.

Theresa Villiers lost her role as environment secretary, but insisted the PM would continue to have her “full support”.

Mr Johnson also fired Northern Ireland secretary Mr Smith after being “blindsided” by his deal which could see Brit veterans prosecuted.

Mr Smith had been considered safe after securing the historic power-sharing deal at Stormont.

However, the PM has now booted him out over part of the deal which included an investigation into alleged crimes by British soldiers in the Troubles.

Speaking yesterday, a senior government source said: There is concern about the way hes been operating”.

It comes despite the cabinet being fully briefed on the deal before it was agreed.

The sacking was made in a landmark reshuffle, that will see the PM promote a string of women in his first Cabinet reshuffle since the election.

Nusrat Ghani was out as transport minister, Chris Skidmore from education and George Freeman out of transport.
