SCHOOLS have been urged to help boost fitness levels for children and adults by opening their doors longer.

Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi wants more after-hours exercise for the public. Playing fields, halls and tennis courts are often locked and left unused during the holidays.

But they could help drive down obesity rates.

Mr Zahawi said: “Many schools already offer their sports facilities to the wider community helping them stay fit and active.

“Where possible I’d encourage as many schools as possible to open their facilities to the local community whether that’s playing fields or swimming pools.

“Young people and adults can enjoy the health and social benefits that sport brings.”

The call comes after Paralympic champion Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson demanded schools open longer in summer to keep kids active.
