KEY worker parents won’t be able to send their kids to school in the summer holidays, No10 said today.

It comes after the Government kept schools open for the children of key workers during the Easter and half term breaks so they could carry on delivering vital services to the nation.

However, there was no detail on whether there will be any schemes in their place – such as summer camps or holiday clubs.

At the moment grandparents cannot look after children unless they are part of the same household.

From Saturday a grandparent or friend can come to help with childcare and form a ‘social support bubble’ with another family – but only if they are currently living alone.

42 per cent of key workers have at least one child aged 16 or below, the IFS has said.

Virtually all key workers – including 93 per cent of health workers and 96 per cent of education workers – are either without a partner or have a partner in work, who might not easily be able to look after their children.

Around 7 million people are thought to be in a key worker profession – such as in the NHS, a teacher, or someone delivering vital services like food delivery workers.
