RUSSIAN leader Vladimir Putin has hailed his country’s second Covid-19 vaccine, due soon, as a “great drug”.

He says it will compete with Sputnik V, an earlier one that was tested on his adult daughter but caused side effects in other cases.

Scientists admit the new one may spark muscle aches.

Putin claims Russia is leading the world in bringing Covid-19 vaccines to the market, but there are criticisms that the drugs are not being rigorously tested.

The Kremlin leader said “yet another vaccine is supposed to appear in September”, clarifying it was from the “famous” Vector State Research Centre of Virology and Biotechnology.

“I am confident that Vektor specialists will produce a great drug which will help people a lot,” said Putin.

The first vaccine – from Gamaleya National Research Centre for Epidemiology and Microbiology – is known to have had a number of side effects including swelling, pain, hyperthermia, a high body temperature, and itching at the place of injection.

The second vaccine named EpiVacCorona was initially seen as avoiding these side-effects, but latest tests show that six out of 100 volunteers complained about muscular aches near where the needle went in.

Vector scientist Alexander Ryzhikov said this was “a very low rate”.

The drug would be in mass production by late October or November, he said.

Russian health ministry immunologist Rakhim Khaitov hit back at Western criticism of the first vaccine, registered before mass trials.

He said: “This is not just another vaccine, it is a modern generation vaccine.”
