PIVOTAL marginal constituencies have the power to swing seats for parties in the upcoming general election on December 12.

Here are the top areas where those hoping to swipe seats from their rivals will be campaigning hard.

1. North East Fife – SNP majority of two

This is the most marginal seat in the country, greatly coveted by the Lib Dems and the Tories.

In 2017, North East Fife saw 10, 000 blue votes – but this could change with Ruth Davidson having stepped down earlier this year to spend more time with her young son.

2. Kensington – Labour majority of 20

Labour took the traditionally Conservative Kensignton seat in 2017.

However, it was won by the smallest English margain – just 20 votes, and could still be easily swung.

3. Perth and North Perthshire – SNP majority 21

The constituency of Pete Wishart, voters held off a Tory majority by 21 votes.

However, with conservative candidates consistently coming second since the constituency’s formation in 2005 – things could easily change.

4. Dudley North – Independent majority of 22

The constituency of Dudley North is represented by Ian Austin – who resigned from Labour earlier this year.

With Dudley North a large leave-voting constituency, it could be a fairly easy majority for the Conservatives.

5. Newcastle-under-Lyme – Labour majority of 30

Having been Labour for over 100 years, the 30 vote majority for the party in the constituency of Newcastle-under-Lyme in 2017 was dangerously small.

If the Tories do take over here, Owen Meredith will take over as the representative of this constituency.

6. Southampton Itchen – Conservative majority of 31

The area began with a Tory majority of more than 2,000 in 2015.

But this comfortable majority has since shrunk to just 31 – which could mean trouble.

7. Richmond Park – Conservative majority of 45

The constituency was won back by The Conservatives in 2017 with a majority of 45 votes.

However, the area is largely remain, making it juicy prey for the Lib Dems.

8. Crewe and Nantwich – Labour majority of 48

Crewe and Nantwich has been a long-time marginal seat, sitting on the fence between Tory and Labour since 2008.

However the slim majority could see change come December.

9. Glasgow South West – SNP majority of 60

Formerly a Labour seat, 2015 saw Glasgow South West taken over by the SNP by a majority of 10,000.

However, in the space of two years this majority dropped to just 60.

10. Glasgow East

Glasgow East has consistently flipped between the SNP and labour since 2008.

As it stand’s the SNP majority of 75 is fair – but could change.

What is a marginal or swing seat?

A marginal or swing seat is a constituency where the incumbent MP has only a small majority.

The seats have a history of electing representatives from different parties and require only a small number of voters to change their minds to see an incumbent MP booted out.

Parties will concentrate resources on these marginal seats, which often see visits from key party figures in the days and weeks before an election.
