BUCKINGHAM Palace is being tested for deadly Legionnaires’ disease.
Much of it has been left empty in lockdown and may have become a breeding ground for the bug, experts say.
The checks are recommended by health and safety officials.
Legionnaires’, a severe form of pneumonia, is caused by inhaling water droplets.
The Queen is in isolation with Prince Philip at Windsor.
It is believed she will not return to the palace until next year.
A royal insider said: “Both palaces are being tested so staff returning are being confined to certain areas.
“They can’t use the water as the tests take two weeks to come through.
“Staff have to share rooms when they usually wouldn’t and are sharing bathrooms.
“They are bunking together and having to boil the water.
“Staff definitely do not want any members of the Royal Family in until it’s tested clear.
“The Queen and staff have gone and left Buckingham Palace to fester.”
The disease causes severe pneumonia and symptoms such as fever, dry cough, shortness of breath and muscle pain and can be mistaken for Covid-19.
