Kate and Prince William, both, 37, chatted with patients and their families at the state-of-the-art cancer facility.

The mum-of-three spent time with seven-year-old Wafia Rehmani, who is receiving treatment for a kidney tumour.

She is undergoing her second round of chemotherapy and doctors are optimistic about her treatment.

Her brother, Hedyatullah Rehmani, said Wafia was looking forward to meeting a ‘real princess’.

He said: “Her father calls her princess and she likes to wear a crown. Now she is looking forward to meeting a real princess.”

Wafia, from Afghanistan, hosted a tea party and she and Kate wore matching tiaras.

The Duchess gladly popped on the colourful tiara after Wafia handed it to her a far cry from the glittering jewels and diamonds she is used to wearing.

She and Prince William got stuck in to the tea party, with the dad-of-three sipping from a pink teacup.

Wafia told the royal couple about her dreams to become a doctor one day, showing them her toy medical set.

Dr Aasim Yusuf, from the hospital, welcomed the Cambridge’s, saying: “It’s a great honour and a privilege for us to be welcoming Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge today.”

Dr Yusuf also welcome Princess Diana when she visited the hospital during avisit in 1996.

Kate met with several young patients during the visit

Photos of Diana at a fundraising event for the hospital cuddling a blind, eight-year-old girl being treated for a tumour were widely shared.

In May the following year just months before her death she returned to visit the sick children.

Princess Diana was good friends with the former Prime Minister and founder of the hospital, Imran Khans, then-wife Jemima Khan, and she helped raise important funds for the centre and spent time with some of the most severely ill children.

“She came here three times. I was very small.

This is my first time and it is very nice to be here and meet you all.”
