MEGHAN Markle has spoken out about the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and called her a “Justice of courage”.
In a statement, the Duchess of Sussex, 39, said: “She has been a true inspiration to me since I was a girl. Honor her, remember her, act for her.”
Meghan added: “With an incomparable and indelible legacy, Ruth Bader Ginsburg will forever be known as a woman of brilliance, a Justice of courage, and a human of deep conviction.”
The duchess is currently living in California with Prince Harry, 36, and their one-year-old son Archie, after stepping down as senior royals in March.
Ginsburg, 87, who was the second female justice ever appointed to the Supreme Court, died on Friday night after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Before she was appointed to the high court, she argued six gender equality cases before the court.
Meghan is just one of the numerous public figures to speak out about the late justice, who is widely considered to be a feminist icon.
Actress Jennifer Lopez said on Instagram: “I am heartbroken.
“She was a true champion of gender equality and was a strong woman for me and all the little girls of the world to look up to.”
Ginsburg – also remembered as the court’s oldest justice – was appointed by President Bill Clinton and joined the court in 1993.
Before taking on her career in public service, Ginsburg grew up in a working-class family in Brooklyn, New York.
It is currently unknown who will be filling the Supreme Court vacancy left by Ginsburg.
Democratic Party vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris described Ginsburg as “a titan – a relentless defender of justice and a legal mind for the ages.”
Former president Barack Obama also shared his official statement to Twitter, saying the late Supreme Court Justice “fought to the end, through her cancer, with unwavering faith in our democracy and its ideals.”
Obama commended Ginsburg as a “warrior for gender equality — someone who believed that equal justice under law only had meaning if it applied to every single American.”
