MEGHAN Markle saw Prince Charles as a “second father” according to the new biography Finding Freedom which was released today.
Authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand detail how she found the Prince of Wales “supportive and loving” from the moment they were introduced, leaving her feeling “emotionally bruised” when she left the royal family.
A source told the authors that Meg did not consider Charles as a father-in-law but rather a “second father.”
The authors write: “Meghan had her own reasons for admiring her father-in-law, who had poignantly walked her down the aisle when her own father let her down.”
Prince Charles, who walked Meghan down the aisle in absence of her own father Thomas Markle in 2018, is said to be just as fond of his daughter-in-law.
A friend of the heir said he had “taken a real shine to Meghan. She’s a sassy, confident, beautiful American.
“He likes very strong, confident women. She’s bright, and she’s self-aware, and I can see why they’ve struck up a very quick friendship.”
The authors also detailed how Meghan had an extremely emotional departure from the royal family, breaking down in tears during one of her final engagements as a royal – the Commonwealth Service at Westminster Abbey.
Meghan had met with 22 students who had received scholarships from the Association of Commonwealth Universities in a ceremony ahead of the service.
The authors described how pent up emotion had shown as Meghan’s tears flowed freely as she said “I can’t believe this” while hugging a female aide she had become close to.
She then changed into her outfit for the service joking “the last hat for a while guys.”
It was the Commonwealth Service where Meghan received the famously “frosty” reception from Kate.
Following the service, Meg booked the first flight to Canada feeling “emotional bruised and exhausted.”
The new insight comes from Meghan and Harry’s unofficial biography, co-written by Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand.
Meghan, 39, and Harry, 35, have insisted they had nothing to do with the book, from which The Times published extracts two weeks ago.
Scobie, who has close ties to Meghan, also said he had not spoken to them directly. However, the book contains intimate information on the early stages of their romance.
